Victrola doesn't mind if POL calls her Jess. You could tell who she meant when she said Jess. I don't see the big deal here.

Hee. I'm frigging out of here if Victrola is Jess13.

        Don't worry, she's not. Who's that?

I can't speak for Ginni, only for myself and here is my take. When a group of new people descend on an already-established board and start calling each other by names not known to those already posting on the board, it's off-putting. Not a BIG deal, just not in good taste as an entrance.

Yeah, I understand. I think we just do it because we do know each other, and we're so used to using real names that we don't even think about it. I'll try to use posting names only, though, if that's how it's done here.

I'm sure it's offputting to have a bunch of newbies show up, too. We just really like the board; we can't help it that it's small and you're all so established. I guess I'm to blame for yesterday's influx; I joined back in November when Isadora showed me the site, but I just told a few of my friends how much I liked it yesterday. They're fun people though, really.

Must be another branch of the family tree. It's too fragmented for me to care about who's intertwined and who's not.

Cran, there's no way you don't know who jess13 is considering how close you are with Roxy. You can't sell that crap here, yo.

As for the name game, if y'all had bothered to read around, you'd never see anyone's "first name" anywhere except for Ginni, Linda, Sarah and Vanessa and that's just if you assume our names *are* Ginni, Linda, Sarah and Vanessa. My guess (and I'm going out on a limb here) is people use those names when refering to us because they are also the logins. Oh, I guess Isadora is a woman's first name, too. I went to HS with one.

You've never seen anyone here call you "Amy" and as you say, you registered in November.

I am close with Roxy, yeah, but I'm only marginally involved in DC fandom, and I'm assuming that's someone from there. If I knew who it was, I wouldn't pretend not to.

And hey, I'm all for sarcasm, but the name thing... dude, do we all have to do everything just like you guys to not be hated around here?

That's interesting, Cran, because as of right now, she's still considered a friend of llamacran at LJ.

Damn, never mind. I only know her through LJ -- I added her when Roxy got a few of us to a long time ago. She hasn't posted since July and I'd forgotten I'd ever read anything she's written. I had no idea she posted anywhere as Jess13. That's it. Sorry for any confusion.

Holy crap. It's so incestuous, it's creepy.

She needed a list of rent-a-friends so her buddy list would look healthy? I'm getting weirded out with these blogs. But that's another thread.

Don't be too dramatic here. Nobody said "Oooh, I hate you!" to you; people were simply pointing out our ways and we're just not shy about doing it. And no, I haven't noticed any great need to be part of a hivemind here, but on the other hand, it is customary when joining a board to try to fit in a little. Social fabric and all that.

And my real name isn't Ginni. Though it may as well be, considering how all my board whores call me that anyway.

It's a polite thing, Cran: You have had this long conversation with people I've never heard of talking about people that I've never heard of in a room where I know most everybody. You don't suddenly show up at a dinner party and talk in loud voices about people that no-one else knows. It's just not proper etty-ketty.

when someone edits their post to change the meaning or delete portions after I've written one related to something they've said in it. Not unlike what frequently happened at FF.

I didn't change the meaning. I wrote that this morning on no sleep and it was worded horribly -- and I mistakenly thought I'd never spoken to Jess, when I actually had (but just in LJ), so I had to correct that. I didn't know she was Jess13, and that was the point, anyway.
