HEADED TO THE ALTAR: Katie Holmes and longtime beau Chris Klein are engaged, per the New York Post. No word on when the winsome twosome will get hitched, they've been together for five years.

December 30, 2003 -- THE holidays put Katie Holmes and Chris Klein in a marrying mood. The perky "Pieces of April" star was in her hometown of Toledo, Ohio, over Christmas, hanging out at the local Banana Republic with a childhood pal and sporting a respectably sized diamond engagement ring, a spy tells us. Holmes, who just turned 25, and "American Pie" star Klein, 24, have been dating for five years. A rep for Holmes confirmed the happy news.

I definitely buy into that, Corey. It seems to me that a 2-celeb marriage can only work if the man is more successful/powerful than the woman (see Rita & Tom, Steven & Kate). If the situation is reversed, forget it.

Which is why I highly doubt CK & KH will even make it the altar (ditto Bennifer) and why I think SMG & Freddie Prinze are a ticking time bomb, assuming she starts making some intelligent script choices.

And in a strange coincidence CITY tv had an item on JJ's latest movie on their 11 pm newscast. Since I was working on our own show at the time I have no idea what he said but the item was shot while he was here working on Aurora Borealis. (I think they finished shooting here in mid-December. BTW, one of the locations was only a block away from the Gap store that has a huge pic of KH in some fugly sweater on the storefront.) The item only caught my eye because they started it with a clip of Juliette Lewis and I was thinking how she has not aged all that well. Then there was a wide shot of JL and JJ working on a scene - he was doing some hand gesture thing like he's trying to not lose his temper while explaining something. A clip from him then another clip from JL.
And now there's an ep of The Outer Limits with Adam Goldberg. It's like I'm in some post-DC 6 Degree time warp.

Movie stars Katie Holmes and Chris Klein are starting 2004 in style after getting engaged over the Christmas break. The Phone Booth actress and American Pie funnyman have been dating for four years, but have yet not named the date for their nuptials. The loved-up pair are now looking for a movie project, so they can work together. Holmes will next be seen in the comedy-romance First Daughter, while Klein's Sundance film The United States of Leland is scheduled for release later this year.

Can I be amused that Chaz is better at his obsession than Mandy? Of course, it's more likely that there were just way more pics of KH. Perish the thought that Mandy wasn't as thorough in her Josh worship as Chaz in his Katie worship.

RAVISHING Rosario Dawson had a fling with Colin Farrell on the set of their upcoming movie, "Alexander" — but she got shunted aside after Farrell flipped for another comely co-star, Angelina Jolie.

A source close to Dawson tells us that the 24-year-old East Village native fell prey to the lusty Leprechaun's charms while shooting Oliver Stone's historical epic in England, Morocco and Thailand. Farrell plays Alexander, the king of Macedonia, and Rosario plays his wife, Roxanne. Anthony Hopkins, Val Kilmer, Jared Leto and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers co-star.

"Rosario said the sex was great with Colin," Dawson's pal tattles. "But he blew her off once Angelina got on the set. Of course, Colin and Angelina ended up getting together.

"Rosario was devastated. She thought they were going to fall in love or something. But c'mon, it's Colin Farrell. What did she think was going to happen?"

Rosario's friend also blabbed that the bust-up with the frisky Farrell hurt her even more when Dawson learned that her ex-boyfriend, "Dawson's Creek" actor Joshua Jackson, was having a baby with his new girlfriend. "She was pretty upset about that," says our source.

Not surprisingly, Dawson's spokeswoman told us that the love triangle tale was "absolutely not true."

She added: "I'm staring at pictures of Rosario and Colin cuddling at the Bangkok Film Festival, which was two weeks ago. They're good friends. I just saw her in L.A. and she's happy, lovely and everything's fine."
