    Especially . . .

That said, Our New Boyfriend is the ONLY person not phoning it all in!

I thought Candice (and her tv mama) both did an excellent job (they made me cry, so), but otherwise, yeah.

The Trio is beset with character drift problems up the old wazhoo. Damon is a caricature of himself now (much like Ian has become a caricature of himself), Stefan is Sir Grumpsalot GFY just running out the clock, and Elena has suddenly become an inappropriate live-in-the-moment prankster who is REALLY obvious about how she fancies bad boys.

That prank with the stake was soooo something Nina would do that I thought it was an ad lib they accidentally left in.

it would have been awesome if he needed her blood for a valid reason and then tortured her just for fun.

Yeah, this is what I was hoping for. I wanted them to have a good reason for Kai needing to drag Elena around him all the time, for many episodes.

You know what part we didn't see? There was a scene in the promo where Kai was supposed to say, "I always win" out in the parking lot. Hoping that's still coming in a future ep, I guess. I do not look kindly on people cutting out Kai scenes just so we can have lingering limp D/E stares.

And the heart eyes! JFC, Nina Dobrev is the worst actress. She wet her panties when he rubbed his thumb on her face and I was like: Um, I'm just gonna take this as more evidence for how effed up Elena is and let Nina off the hook.

I honestly don't know what the editor was thinking when they left that stuff in there. It says something SO WEIRD about Elena, that she was REALLY FUCKING ENJOYING that moment.

HE LICKED HIS FINGER AND SHE LIKED IT.

And Paul is just over there in the corner, wearing the director's hat, watching Nina and Chris being flirty.

You just know Paul was all, "Ian is going to HATE THIS. YASSS."

    He's the Original Woodbrev Shipper.

But yeah, the fact that they left in so many frames of Nina's Chris-related heart eyes, means that the rest of the footage they had to work with was even *worse*, you know? She probably crawled right into his lap.

No wonder these two were 'iceskating' within weeks of filming this scene. Rockstar boyfriend bedamned.

Enzo is such a bore. Wow, if he's getting screen time still just by being a charming actor/human? Then Christopher Wood is the big bad for the rest of the series unless Ian has THAT MUCH pull with the network.

From your keyboard to Plec's ear!

    • Did Sheriff Forbes fake!die just to get Delena back together? Because REALLY? It didn't even bring Steroline closer to have HER mom fake!die. And then to have Caroline's mom be the catalyst to "move on" with Stefan? I mean, Caroline's pretty great without having to make a deathbed promise to her mom to be there for her.

This whole cancer storyline is kinda offensive given how it's been utilized to catapult a couple of romances that didn't need the catalyst.

Ugh, shut up Tyler. Like alllll episode.

But excellent of them to give Luke a send-off, since he's the least important witch! And Kai is supervillain! Wheeeee!
Itís just really honestly so tiring and emotionally draining to have to get upset over reality constantly.

      • If you fast forward the D/E stuff (and anytime Tyler was around), this was a very enjoyable episode.

I'm still on board for all things Forbes and all things Forbes/Stefan. Liz and Caroline are going to make me cry every week until Liz finally kicks it. Totes okay with that. This isn't how I pictured Steroline becoming a couple (and Paul has got to be bored silly with Stefan The Comforter), but eh. Whatever.

What is up with daylight rings being so easy to get, though? All through S1-S3 they were kinda a big deal that only Bennett witches could do . . . which meant very very very few vampires even knew they existed and they were 'special'. But in S5/6 we've got Enzo walking around in daylight with ZERO explanation for how/when/why he has a ring, AND Alaric the same thing . . . he came back from the dead a vampire, but Bonnie was already stuck in 1994, so where the heck did his ring come from? AND NOW JO IS LIKE TRA LA LA YEAH HERE'S YUR STOOOPID RING ELENA LOL. Cheapens everything vampire, tbh.

Oh! And how did Tyler wake up? Did the drugs just run out or something? He should have stayed in the same coma Kai was in. Having him pop up just in time to save Liv yet again was straining credulity.

Seriously though,Tyler is so useless and unlikeable this season. My interest in him has gone negative. His storyline used to revolve around Caroline, now it revolves around a different curly haired blonde. And he's just over the top shrill and rage-y! I don't get it. WHY IS TYLER WHY.

Kinda hope Kai kills him, tbh. They told us not everyone would be going to S7, right? And we know Liz is dunzo and Jeremy is dunzo . . . but I'm wondering if they are going to save Tyler's death for a surprise. Kai has to keep the body count rolling to continue being a viable villain, and Tyler would be an easy sacrifice to make for that endeavor.

        Okay, rants over.

According to next week's promo (we don't care about spoilers anymore, therefore I don't care about putting stuff in the spoiler thread), Kai is going to help Elena, Damon and Jeremy communicate with/save Bonnie.

        http://youtu.be/4DvFdOahufA

That is strangely awesome? But mostly just strange, since . . . why? Kai had four stated objectives:

        1) Get out of Prison 1994: check
        2) Learn how to use the internet: check
        3) Merge with sibling and win: check
        4) Hunt down Gemini coven and give them all a bloody death . . . .

He should be off accomplishing #3, not hanging around the SBH with losers he doesn't care about, to save some other loser he doesn't care about.

Just wondering what kind of leverage they still have to keep Kai in town and! doing favors for them.

Spec on tumblr/twitter is that the merge was Plec and co's way of altering the fundamental nature of Kai. They made a point of saying that the merge results in a blending of souls into somebody new, not just a binary winner/loser equation. In theory, we have given up some indefinable amount of Kai's snarky psycopath-ousity for Luke's ability to love and be self-sacrificing. And voila! magically overnight, Kai is able to grow and change as a character.

        This could be true?

I know we had specced that they would soften Kai by turning him, but making him the uber powerful witch leader of a coven who hates him is even better than just another pointless vamp on a show where the vamps ceased being scary a couple of seasons ago.

Ian and Paul both said that Chris had "some really good stuff coming up", and watching Kai gain a soul and a conscience as a kind of Kai-Luke hybrid might be what they were referring to. He could actually become *more* dangerous once he has to deal with guilt over what he's done -- for awhile, anyway. If he stops liking himself and starts hating himself, we could see some major fireworks.

And Plec REALLY loves woobifying her bad guys by having them bottom out first in some kind of major breakdown. Without the woobifying, she won't keep them around for multiple seasons. It's a decent tradeoff, I guess, maybe? Not ideal, because I'd kinda rather keep Kai unrepentantly magnificently murderpuppy forever, but I guess that's not the TVD way. If a woobie Kai-Luke is the only way Chris stays employed and on my teevee, I can make my peace with that.

Of course, the way Julie most likes to achieve woobification is saving the Bad Guy through the power of a Good Girl, which is probably the real reason they are sending SMQ off the show. There are a surprising number of BonKai shippers out there, and they are very vocal. Since Caroline and Elena are both too tied up to be of redemption-by-vagina service, Bonnie would make the most practical sense. I can get behind a Good Witch/Bad Witch romance, why not. I feel sure Chris can sell it.

Yeah, it's kind of gross. If Candice Accola wasn't such a fabulous cry-er, I'd be less into this whole thing. As it is, I love her face and I love it sad, so I'm overlooking the gross parts.

As for the D/E aspects, it doesn't really matter what they use to drag this flaccid ship around and prop it up. I'm too far past caring.

The primary conceit of TVD is that super powerful beings who have both the means to be anywhere and make anything happen (in terms of the circles they travel in and the places they could go) just slow down and hang out and worry about Elena's love life. So I sorta have given up hoping that part of the story makes any kind of sense whatsoever. It's why I can't fathom why some of the oldest/most powerful beings on earth are super duper concerned about who is the most powerful person in the French Quarter on The Originals. It's baffling to me.

I can sorta see him having a character evolution b/c he merged with his brother who selflessly sacrificed his life to save someone he loves--the ultimate act in most supernatural stories (post JK Rowling). So him not just absorbing his brother's power but his brother's consciousness is a smart way to "redeem" Kai. Super bored with him hooking up with Bonnie but, eh, she wouldn't be the girl on this show to hook up with a sometime-sociopath.

I actually love the idea that the *way* the merge happened (as a hero's sacrifice) could have farther reaching consequences than a simple merge with Jo would have on Kai's newly forged identity. It would be kind of awesome if Kai 'lost' through 'winning' . . . and if Luke's sacrifice had the kind of actual weight and substance that saved the other Geminis from Kai's former wrath.

            • Since 'merge' is the theme, I'm merging spoilers in with discussion so we don't have to bother with two threads anymore. It's not like I ever get any high quality spoilers anymore any way.

Yeah . . . sounds like we are dead on about Kai struggling post-merge. If Jo is softhearted enough to help him, that will explain why he stays in Mystic Falls. Perhaps the effects make him vulnerable and he has to hide from his dad/other Gemini, and Jo decides he's still her family to protect.

Which is a stretch given that it's Kai . . . but maybe *not* a stretch if he's actually Kai-Luke (Kaike? Lukai?) and she feels like she is also saving whatever is left of Luke that survives in Kai.

∑ 4h4 hours agoNow that Luke is inside Kai (...) can @ChristophrWood dye his hair blond again? Those were good times. #TVD

The other spec online is that Kai will be gay/bi-sexual now that he has merged with Luke. Which did not occur to me. Might be amusing to see him hit on Damon and Elena at the same time. Even funnier if they both consider it.

              • This show is not progressive enough to go with bisexual, IMO. They'll probably just tease with subtext if we're lucky.

The producers look at 6.13: http://youtu.be/I1b5V-4Nfzc

They are definitely keeping our BabyBoy Kai around awhile.

They are giving him the almost-Klaus treatment, with two dead giveaways:

                  -- he is showing empathy/emotion/guilt.
-- he can't be killed without Liv and Jo and the whole Gemini coven dying. He is literally unkillable, just like Klaus.

The only thing missing from the full-Klaus is a love interest, and I'll bet they will correct that by having him save Bonnie.

In a weird way, I sort of love how predictable Plec and Dries are with the well-worn path of Redemption Blvd. I'm just sad they save that pathway only for hot guy villains and not Katherine.

It's pretty much the only reason to tune in, to see what actor-ly choices ONB will make.

                      Sure ain't watching for this:

                        • Right?

I could spend HOURS comparing these two gifs to each other:

In the top one, she's like, "YES I WANT THAT INSIDE ME PLEASE" and in the bottom one she's a barely patient toddler letting grandma clean her face.

Nina is a good actor by CW standards, but she ain't quite good enough to plaster over *that*.

Thank beek that Luke!Kai is still damn funny and interesting and compelling.

I hope ONB is checking his mentions tonight, because people are going nuts over his performance in this ep.

And Steroline! That was the most life we've seen in Paul all season. Stefan was actually interesting in this ep, and I was feeling Steroline majorly.

Kat did a very nice job, too. And I like how they have already shut the door on Beremy before she even comes home. It was always the dullest of ships.

Wow, that HL 'journalist' is CRAY for thinking Bonnie/Enzo would ever happen. What show are they watching?

Anyway, every time we switched over to Tyler/Liv or Enzo/Matt . . . . meh. So boring. All that screen time should have gone to Kai and his dealing with teh emoshuns, beeksus.

And the best thing that can be said about D/E is thank beek they abbreviated the DEX scene. I'm sure that was intentional. First DEX of the whole season and it was like 10 seconds long? Yeah, that was because that's all they could get out of Nina, for sure.

HE SAYS WHAT WE ARE THINKING.

I feel like the writers made Kai an anti-DE shipper just so they could express their own pent up feelings about it.

(and we see you making heart eyes at Chris in the background, Neens.)

                              • Yeah, I agree about most everything. BUT I also think they have sort of ruined the Steroline stuff because why does it feel that Stefan is being DRAGGED along to a girl who is obviously awesome and way better than VampElena?

I liked that they acknowledged that they had to fundamentally change Elena's character to get her with Damon. A lot of the episode felt like a concession: Yes, we know Delena is weird and it sucks but we're hostage to it now....so...that's where we're at!

Kai was great. He continues to be the most interesting person on the show.
