  • The only TV things I enjoy now are comedies, but I do want to love again

Same here. Still clinging to The Good Place, B99, Superstore, etc. but otherwise I'm ass deep into unscripted bits of fluff right now. Finished up 90 day Fiance and all the offshoots available and now working my way slowly through RHONJ (I normally only watch Vanderpump Rules, RHONY, RHOC, and RHOA, but thought I'd give the early years of RHONJ a shot). I've also watched all things Bachelor Nation in the past couple of years instead of CW shows and even flirted with giving Love Island UK a try. So maybe I've just rendered my brain unable to deal with scripted teen dramz because nothing seems quite as ACTUALLY dramatic as the unscripted* stuff I've been injecting directly into my cerebral cortex.

    * which is obvs still scripted on some levels, duh.

I'm basically on the Chrissy Teigen tv diet.

Oh, I forgot that I did try Dickinson on Apple +! Watched the first ep (It was pretty wild!) because I get a year free and was like why the hell not. Might keep watching, dunno.

    Yuuuup.

Might be worth watching just to get to the part when John Mulaney shows up as Thoreau.

    • I have Dickinson on my watch list! Maybe I'll start it this week. I started The Morning Show last night and I'm only one episode in, but I liked it a lot. It's the most likable JennyAn has been since Friends and Reese basically gets to play her Sweet Home Alabama character, but she's a reporter instead of a clothing designer. Mr. Issie is out of town all week and we promised we'd wait to watch the new Jack Ryan season together so that's probs next.

I never did go back to finish the Alaska show. I watched a couple more episodes, but like, no one is super interesting and/or attractively shippable which is the whole point of a teen show so meeeeeeh. Maybe I'll revisit it some day? If you're looking for a teen show, Elite is nommable. Everyone in it is sexy hawt, they're all making horrible decisions, and the houses/clothes are Gossip Girl quality. Plus, you get to learn some Spanish! The new season of Atypical came out a little bit ago and I binged that. It's still so good and it's one of those shows I love, but then forget about until the next season is released. Each season is only 8-10 episodes and they're short so you can bang it out in one day and then that's it for a year. I don't know that I'd call it a teen show, it's more of a family story, but there is a lot of focus on the teens and their lives with their friends.

My mainstays are Grace and Frankie, Good Place, Queer Eye, Great British Baking Show, and Patriot Act so that I stay *just* angry enough at the world. Oh! I tried Mindy Kaling's Four Weddings and I didn't like it. The production feels oddly cheap and the actors are pretty awful. I did see a preview for a new post-breakup friendship show with Kat Dennings that I'll check out. Also, errbody is fixing to have new holiday romcoms so I'm basically just waiting to be smashed in the face with that.

      • I loved S1 and S2 of Atypical; I will take a Star Trek break soon and watch S3. I would not call it a teen show either, even though it has teens in it. I love the parents too.

        • Definitely still watching Queer Eye and GBBO! Just ain't the same without Mel, Sue, and Mary Berry, though.

I keep hearing good things about Atypical, although I don't normally like family ensemble stuff. Might put it on the list.

This might be the first year in like, 20 years, that I'm not watching anything with hot teens crushing on each other in it, so weird.

          • For me it's that the shows that I was watching ended up disappointing me so badly that I am afraid to try something new. La Casa de Papel / Money Heist is my hope that it doesn't crash and burn. And good ships too. No teens though.

YES. After the debacle of VMARS S4, I don't know how to trust in ships/shows again.

So! I was gonna try out Atypical tonight but . . . is it heartwarming and quirky Gilmore Girls-like, or do y'all like it because it makes you cry a whole bunch like those other family shows? I don't do crying shows willingly. I need at least 75% quirk and ha ha ha to balance it out.

              • It's more quirky and funny, but it has its share of tearjerker moments. It is definitely more GG than This Is Us or Parenthood, neither of which I watched because they felt manipulative.

                • OMG, I just realized that Vmars S4 is why I haven't watched TV in months, basically? And everything I watch I'm like: This is fine but I don't feel anything... LOL
Itís just really honestly so tiring and emotionally draining to have to get upset over reality constantly.

                  • I gave up on This Is Us this season; I don’t need to cry every week over that emotion porn.

                    • Bwa! Pretty sure I watch This Is Us BECAUSE it’s manipulative and I just want to make sure I can still feel. I’m like o with the reality show drama, only for me I guess it’s hyper-emo families.

                      • I still like and watch This is Us but I'm not super invested and it does not make me cry one bit. I actually find it soothing. Huh. The shows that I actually thought were good TV (and movies in Marvel's case) like GoT and VM let me down big time and the ones I know are mediocre like Suits and Arrow and This is Us actually follow through emotionaly and with their endings. (I mean, TiU hasn't eneded but from what we see from the flash forwards most things are fine). Maybe The Good Place will be the exception and the the actual good show with satisfying ending.

I think I'm honestly only now coming to terms with what Rob Thomas did to my poor fucking heart. I'm so fragile now! I don't think I can invest in another ship until a show is completely ovah and done and somebody swears to me that it ends well and will make me happy and NOBODY DIES.

Doesn't help that I was all excited about a new season of Wynona Earp on Netflix a couple of months ago and then only two eps in they killed half of my ship off FOR NO BEEKDAMN REASON BEEKDAMNIT and now I can't be bothered to watch anymore of that either.

But if I can't invest in ships anymore THEN WHO CARES ABOUT TV. UGH. That's all that really mattered! (to me.)

                          Rob Thomas the Life Ruiner.

(not that thrilled with you either, KBell! YOU WERE LIFE RUINER ADJACENT AND YOU KNOW IT.)

                            • I have resolutely avoided The Good Place until it ends and someone tells me it doesn’t betray the audience in the end. I know too many people who are very invested in that show, and so it must be good, but I don’t trust them not to break all of their viewers.

                              • It’s a Schur show, though. He physically can’t produce anything that doesn’t bring you joy.
