started a topic What are you watching?

    What are you watching?

Don't we need a generic television thread? Yeah, I thought so.

So, my latest excitement is that my cable company just gave us some new channels!

MTV2 -- I've been dying for this one for YEARS now. YAY.

MTV Hits -- The description says it caters to the "younger" MTV demographic. As far as I can tell, the only difference between this and regular MTV is that it actually plays videos. Basically it's Beyonce, Pink, and Hilary Duff. Oh joy.

VH1 Mega Hits -- This says it plays hits from the 90s and today. I haven't really watched it, so I can't say what they actually show or what makes it different from regular ol' VH1.

But the big excitement is VH1 Classic -- OMB! I it. Last night, in one half-hour period I saw the Go-Gos (now I'm blanking on the song, but it wasn't one of their bigger hits -- it's the video where they're dressed up as a boy band playing at a dance in the 50s/60s, and Rob Lowe is in it), Rick Springfield (again, not one of his typical bigger hits -- it was "Don't Talk to Strangers" -- I forgot how great that video was, hee!), Roxy Music (it was "Avalon," but still), the Kinks, and Lou Reed. I feel that my ass will be planted on the couch watching that channel for an inordinate amount of time.

I haven't really checked them out much, but we also got The DIY Network and the Style Network.

There was one funie show on the Style Network called "Style Court". It had me rolling. Basically it's like "The People's Court" (and it even has Doug Llewelyn!) except that people bring on friends and family members who have bad style. And then the judge -- along with a "celebrity" jury (the ep I watched featured Dr. Joyce Brothers, Brandi Roderick (who I only knew from "The Surreal Life"), and Bobby Trendy (who I only knew from "The Anna Nicole Show") -- sets down the verdict of whether they've committed fashion violations (believe me, they all have). Then they get a makeover. OMB, the ep I watched had this lady who painted on these scary, scary eyebrows. They were literally half and inch thick, and they were at this crazy dramatic angle. Then she had these kerrazy eyelashes. And she was so freaky delusional. The Judge is all, "Have you EVER seen anyone who wasn't IN A MOVIE who had your kind of look?" And she's like, "Yes, Cher." He's all, "BESIDES FRIGGIN" SCARY CHER!" (I'm paraphrasing, hee.) She really, truly didn't seem to understand how kerrazy she looked. I didn't stick around to see the makeover (because I was excitedly flipping around with all my other new channels, hee!), but I will definitely be back for that show.

Oh and OOH! There's also now Nicktoons, the all-cartoon Nickelodeon channel, which is very exciting, as they play old "Ren & Stimpy" and "Pinky and the Brain" eps. Whee!

I thought Roswell was okay and could have some potential, but that is a big if. The writing was not great. Plus I know they are wanting it to have a political aura to it and I was not into that at all. Plus I thought she made some poor choices, like replacing their Tabasco sauce (which they could not legally use) with nail polish remover.

I loved Sex Education on Netflix. I laughed until I cried.

I'm also sad Roswell is getting such shit reviews. I was really looking forward to some cheese. I need to replace Riverdale, because it's terrible.

It looks hllarious! I, on the other hand, cannot stop watching Babylor Berlin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnsKrUymjCc) even though it can be very depressing. The female protagonist is awesome, though and the production impecable.

Now for something completely different . . . gonna rec Derry Girls on Netflix.

Comedy, Catholic high school girls in Northern Ireland during The Troubles in 1992. Only 6 quick (22 mins) eps, totally and utterly hilars. The accents are a work of art, so if you aren't Irish, I recommend subtitles.

Sister Michael is probably my fave school head of all time. OF ALL TIME.

    More Xmas movie recs!

Love At The Christmas Table (free on Amazon Prime) has got Ted from Schitt's Creek, Winnie Cooper, Luke Danes, and Marty McFly's mom in it. It's super cute, y'all.

No Sleep Til Christmas (free on Hulu) has got Justin from Brothers And Sisters (Dave Annable), his real life wife Odette (aka Reign from Supergirl), and Marcel from The Originals. The premise is wild but this one is also kinda cute.

Ugh, I still have to borrow a family member’s Prime password and START. Honestly don’t know how I’ve survived this long without viewing new Sherman-Palladino product.

A friend and I did watch the Vanessa Hudgens switcheroo movie the other day and it was hilars! We drank every time her British(?) accent would suddenly drop, so we finished half a Bota Box. Also, there was the bizarre bald notch in the lead actor’s haircut that no one bothered to fix, the miniskirts and platform heels on a “royal” LOL, the complete lack of obstacles or drama, especially when they reveal the sham weekend to the dudes...What a frigging delight.

My favorite part about Ben was that he totally dug Midge's unconventional life choices. It sucks that he won't be given the chance to prove that he's awesome because the Palladinos will Palladino and we'll 99% end up with Midge and Joel being comedy OTPs at the end, but ugh, Joel is 1)NOT AS CUTE AS CHUCK BARTOWSKI, THANK YOU, 2)a sniveling little cheater, and 3)see #1. I am wondering if we might see a Midge/Lenny Bruce sidetrack romance at some point. These seasons are pretty short and tight so they might not explore that path, but during S1 I thought they might be headed that way.

Also, are we just supposed to sleep on the glaringly obvious fact that Midge is kind of a shitty/neglectful mother? Her kids are straight up props this season.

Obvs, Midge suffers from Rory Gilmore Syndrome (she's the MOST SPECIAL GIRL THAT EVER SPECIALED)
The Palladinos really push this to the limit. When she and Joel hold up traffic to get engaged and then people on the sidewalk started clapping, I wanted both of their special asses to get run over. Like, fuckin' MOVE, you douchebags.

Related: do I need to buy this even though I have a black jacket and a black coat?

My precious 2-hrs-after-everyone-else-has-gone-to-bed-tv-watching-time turned into 4-hrs-after-everyone-else-has-gone-to-bed-tv-watching-time so I could breeze through Mrs.Maisel S2, and yeahhh, it was very extra Palladino-esque with the speed talking. (in related news, I'm VERY TIRED NOW).

I definitely enjoyed the season overall, even though I thought it was uneven in parts (the first ep was . . . not great? especially the stuff where we are supposed to think a club full of French people think Midge is uhmazing even though she only speaks English and isn't being very funny? Midge is lovable but not THAT lovable.

Kinda thinking that's the last we will even see of Zach Levi since a) he represents the stability and domestic home life she rejected in the finale and b) and she said she wanted to be with someone who LOVES HER for her last night in town but chose FUCKING JOEL (the pun works either way!) instead of Benjamin (who really did love her, too!) and c) I think Benjamin = Max Medina, beekdamnit. I don't get ASP's fascination with Joel! we spent waaaaay too much time on him and his parents and their whosit whatsit and whatevs. I worry that they are setting him up to have his own club so that his future life and Midge's future life will be more compatible. He's rich-ish and the baby daddy-ish like Christopher, but has that 'just a common man who will punch you' thing like Luke, so you knoooooow Midge/Joel will probs be endgame.

As much as I enjoy the show because OH THE PRETTY and TEH FUNNY, I gotta say I'm bothered by how disposable every woman not named Midge, Susie, and Rose are. And this!

Obvs, Midge suffers from Rory Gilmore Syndrome (she's the MOST SPECIAL GIRL THAT EVER SPECIALED), but I thought it was troubling how throw-away the other women were (especially Joel's rando hook-ups, who were literally interchangeable, and how all of Midge's 'friends' at B.Altman's are basically dismissed as terminally dumb . . . and how the female staff in Susie's Catskills cabin AND the women from Rose's class at Columbia dreams were all trampled brutally as being pointless).

That said! I could have lived in those Catskills episodes 5EVAH.

    THE CLOTHES. Wheee!

Me too! I went into it thinking I'd play it in the background while I started wrapping Christmas presents, but then got really into it. All of the pageant girls were great and I loved how much
Dolly singing there was throughout the whole movie. I was hoping she'd make a surprise cameo at the pageant or something so that's my one quibble. Former beauty queen clinging to relevance is kind of JennyAn's whole life so she was perfect in this.

We watched S2 of Mrs. Maisel and I still really liked it, but found it to be much slower paced than the first season despite the Palladinos doubling down on the fast talking. Every scene sounds like it's being played at 1.5x it's intended speed. I love the addition of Zach Levi as Midge's new love interest and I HATE that Midge will probably eff it all up by messing around with her loser ex, I loved her mother's art school attempt, and was super into the whole Dirty Dancing Catskills summer camp parts. I think this type of show makes me miss the traditional format of TV where you can get a little dose once a week for several months. We binged this over 3 days and now we don't get anymore for at least a year which is so loooooong. I also wish they'd do more episodes if they're gonna stay gone for such long stretches. OH! And I LOOOOVED Midge's wardrobe so so so so much. The coat section of her closet is my multi-colored J. Crew coat dreamland. Related: do I need to buy this even though I have a black jacket and a black coat?

I liked Dumplin' a lot! It was very sweet, if predictable. Aniston's upper lip was so frozen she couldn't enunciate during her big, dramatic scenes! Super weird.

I've seen nthe Spirit of Christmas one! It is PG but the actors actually have chemistry with each other. The ending was VERY abrupt but otherwise I actually enjoyed it for what it was.
